This past weekend, your truly had the joy of doing judging work at the PTQ in Oklahoma City, here's the Top 8 decks, with commentary first, as well as the top 8 players. Enjoy! The turn out was pitiful between the 4th of July Weekend and the fact that it was OKC. Only about 80 people arrived, so we played 7 rounds of swiss to break off the final 8, which made for a relatively fast qualifier. The day started off with people arguing with me over what happened with 3 Sands of Time in play, and the rest of them saying "I didn't know Abeyance did THAT!!! I gotta get some!" Then things started to calm down as three main themes asserted themselves:Burn, Bosium Strip, and Necratog. Equipoise/Sands of Time was a distant memory by the 4th round, but it remained interesting, as George Baxter during the Swiss got paired against 2 of his ex-Team Dallas mates, beating both, only to be knocked out of Final 8 by a kid playing 8 Maro deck with 4 Maros, 4 Freewind Falcon, 4 Diskrider Falcon, and 4 Empyrial Armor. The 3rd game was quite funny as Jeremiah (the kid) put out a Maro, attacked with it as a 5/5 , so George Tidal Waved it. Well George was a bit mana screwed and only had 3 lands, so the kid put out City Of Solitude, and George's reaction was priceless. George is a good friend, and he took it with his usal style....a laugh and a oh well, maybe next time. The other amazing thing was the discovery apparently of the Magic playing world all at once of the 6th playable card from Homelands:Memory Lapse. Almost everyone was playing this card! It was absolutely amazing to see how a card can go from being totally reviled to being utilized by so many at once. Anyway, the day proved to be the day of the Weenie when all was said and done, but in my opinion the strongest deck fielded for the day was the Necratog deck used by Roy Roberts and Bill Macey from Austin. The only reason Bill didn't win was because he simply could not get a decent draw in his finals match. The Final 8 went as follows: Bill Macey vs -----Bill Macey David Williams -----Bill Macey Patrick Lynch vs -----James Stroud James Stroud The Winner ----Cortney Cunningham Cortney Cunningham vs ----- Cortney Cunningham James Murphy -----Cortney Cunningham Roy Roberts vs ----- Roy Roberts Jason Page So without any more delay...the Decks!! The Necratog "Graveyard Superiority Deck" Courtesy of Bill Macey and Roy Roberts. 4 Necratog 4 Nekrataal 2 Tombstone Stairwell 3 Fledgling DJinn 3 Song of Blod (!!) 4 Shadow Guildmage 3 Fog Elemental 3 Sage Owl 4 Man O War 4 Ertai's Familiar 3 Fallen Askari 5 Island 1 Mountain 3 Bad River 2 Undiscovered Paradise 2 Gemstone Mine Sideboard: 3 Ebony Charm 2 Bubble Matrix 3 Knight of the Mist 3 Crypt Rat 2 Mind Bend 2 Mind Harness At first this deck looks like a bunch of garbage, but seeing this deck in action is an awesome sight. The cards all work together so well to usually end up in a kill by either Tombstone Stairwell tokens (Saw Roy once go "I attack you with my 12 Tokens and 3 creatures....You have 1 creature and 2 tokens....") or the Necratog, which with several creatures in the graveyard became almost impossible to kill. Cortney Cunningham's "Snap Into a Slim Jim!"
