Subject: Online Extended Mono Green Tournament Report Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 19:43:58 -0500 From: Andrew Schwimmer To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com So I wake up at about 11:23 give or a take a few seconds and before brushing my teeth, combing my 1/8th of an inch hair or getting something to eat I decide to feed my addiction and go online. I see that there's an extended tournament at noon so I get to work on a deck. I check out the dojo to try and get a template for a deck. Basalt - G/W Ernie Geddon I have the memory of cheeze wiz and didn't have time to take notes the 1st round so it's noting but I lost, I won, I won. I seem to be somewhat cursed/blessed with the ability to loose the 1st game and come back the other 2. His Land Taxes didn't do him any good at all whenever he got one out in all 3 games 1-0 2-1 ExarKun - B/R Sedge Trolls Game 1: With my record of mazimum scrubyness I get destroyed the 1st game. Game 2: He destroys some of my early critters. 3/3 flying scryb sprite smacks him a few times, I scroll his last 4 life when my critter onslaught stalls due to his 3 3/3 regenerating trolls Game 3: Null ROD blocked my 2nd turn Cursed Scroll. I of course sided out my 1 main deck monkey in favor of something or other... He pops out 3 Dauthi Stalkers (for which my only real defence was my cursed scroll). THE RACE IS ON! He has a Sedge Troll out so I figure he's gonna block my Ernie ever time so I lay every critter I have on the table (including another ernie). I get him to 1 when I'm at 8. He attacks with his 3 slayers. I bite my tongue expecting a bolt. none... Instead he drops Dystopia and says "strong at one life, u win" 2-0 4-2 Crazy - Pebbles Game 1: I see plains, lotus petal, goblin bombardment 1st turn... oh boy. My hand consisted of 5 lands, a scroll and an elf... I get out the scroll, elf, sprite and mishra and beat him down. I guess he didn't draw any of the combo or anything to block my 1/1 and 2/2 weenies Game 2: He perishes away some weenies with me holding 2 Erhnams and 2 mishra's on the table. I am one turn away from killing him when the combo goes off. Game 3: I drop a 2nd turn armored sprite and he disenchants the armor 6 life points later. He drops a Shield Sphere and then force of wills my Yavimaya Ant... I am holding a Tranquil domain so I'm not really worried yet. I waste a Tundra and lay an Ernie. He then says that he forgot he wanted to tap the tundra in response. I pick up my ernie, untap my lands and am about to announce my attack phase when he says he concedes... HUH??? 3-0 6-3 Towser - Verdant Force/Reanimates Game 1: He mulligans and I see Natural Orders and Reanimates... He discards a Verdant Force 1st turn and then Reanimates it 2 turns later. I bust out weenies like a madman Armoring the Sprites to get him to 6 (STRONG!) then next turn armoring it again to kill him (I had a granger out). Game 2: I realize the key to killing him is in my sprites. None opening hand. He lays an elephant grass which really screws with my attack. He drops another one but I have the mana to pay for my Ernie to attack, I realize that I have to get him to 8 life so he can't reanimate the force that he discarded 1st turn. He plays a Hidden Horror but it dies to my GG River Boa and I get him to 8 so I don't think I have to deal with a 7/7 walking outpost. 2 Turn later he concedes. 4-0 8-3 TopCat - Counterpost Game 1: He's land screwed (island, plains, outpost) and my early weenies run him down. Game 2: Serrated Arrows pick off my boas and powersinks my armor leaving me with just 2 mishra's against his outpost. I topdeck a wasteland... My opponent tries to use his arrows on my mishra's, I tell him to ask the judge and I let him take back the arrorw counter. He taps out and gerrards up to 11, I drop a centaur. He wraths, and drops another outpost, I waste. It's like some stupid game of ping pong. He forces my guildmage, I continue the beatdown with the mishra drawing nothing but land. Fo 5-0 10-3 (yes, I'm sure I'm playing mono green) QuarterFinals Norbule - CounterPost Game 1: I play a sprite He says "Wtf? You're playing with Scryb Sprites?" I pick off his life untill her gets to 8, then he Gerrards up to 20. For some odd reason he wasn't using his mishra to block mine. Probably afraid of a GG. My critters pick off his life, he disks, I have more critters... Game 2: SLOWLY pick at his life in between wraths until he almost taps out for a disk. I attack, he taps out for an outpost token and goes down to 2. I armor a weenie... Semifinals JediCapt - Pebbles Game 1: Slowly peck down his life in between wraths watching him play library tricks. He counters the armor that would've won me the game then next turn drops Enduring Renewal, Goblin Bombardment and Shield Sphere... I Blink... He apoligizes for his top decking skills. I've been on my computer for about 6+ hrs now. Game 2: Forget to play land turn 3 and have some fat in my hand. Combo goes off turn 5. So I get 3rd place and a years supply of turtle wax (Official PWL Turtle Wax, you can't buy this stuff in stores!). Props: Towser who went with an original deck, unlike lots at the tournament I imagine. Metamorph for a well run tourney JediCapt for being in the tournament at around 1 AM and still having the brain power to untap and get into the top 8. G-d knows I wouldn't have been able too. Nev for making the deck. ARMORED SPRITES RULE!
