Local Type 2 Tourney

It was February 1, 1998, and Time Tunnel hosted a local Type 2 tourney in Castle Shannon, PA (Pittsburgh suburb). There were 39 people registered for 4 rounds of Swiss with single-elimination Final 16. First prize $100, second $50, third $35. Play all three games each round, total points (3 for win, 1 for draw); no ID's in final round of Swiss.

Mandatory Background

I had never played in a Type 2 tourney before, heck, I'd only played in two constructed tourneys before. I'm generally a White Weenie player, but I decided to deviate and play something a little different (for me), CounterHammer. Not amazingly original, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Swiss Rounds

I'm really bad with names, so there aren't any. So there.

Round 1

Sligh, but a slightly weird one with Goblin Lords.

Game 1: Can't seem to find Disks, get pecked and burnt to death.

Game 2: See game 1.

Game 3: Early mana-screw, the glorious one Quicksand draw. Fortunately, he's mana-glutted so he can't kill me right away. Finally get Disks and make it interesting. He gets me down to 4 and I stop him with a Disk, then start Sandstalker beatdown. Finally out of counters, I draw a Fireball and go for the big finish. He Fireblasts me in response.

Games 0-2-1, 1 point.

Round 2

White weenie, all 1 or 2 cc critters, almost entirely 1/1's, 4 Crusades.

Game 1: He gets the fast start, and I get a really slow one, kinda mana screwed. He 'geddons to help me along on that route and beats me to 4. I finally get enough land to drop a Disk, no Disenchant from him. Major card advantage turns the tide and I keep him at bay with counters.

Game 2: Side in Flashfires and a Tremor. He again beats me down a bunch, even with only two land--four or five dudes on the board. I draw a Disk with four land out, but I have a Disrupt in hand, so I wait. Next draw is land, so I drop the Disk. He taps his only two to Disenchant, I Disrupt. Thank you, draw a card. Flashfires. Blow the Disk, kill all his land. Another big recovery.

Game 3: Again, get beat down a lot early, but get a Disk through. He gets Freewinds on the board though, which I can't burn. I'm low when I top-deck a Disk, drop it. No Disenchant. Blow the disk, beatdown with Stalkers.

Games 3-2-1, 9 points.

Round 3

Teferihaups, fat phasers like Fog Elemental, Breezekeeper, and Sandbar Crocodile.

Game 1: I get two Mountains and one Island all game, and goldfish. Thank you for playing.

Game 2: At least he doesn't know what to 'board against me. I put in all the blasts and drop the Kindles and Incinerates, since they can't kill his fat. Blow some Disks, counter a big 'Haups, and beat down with Rainbow and Sandstalker.

Game 3: He gets the early Crocodile, I manage to hold off the Teferi so it kills me very slowly. I'm pounding with the Stalker just a little bit faster. He finally counters the Stalker, but I Quake for the win.

Games 5-3-1, 16 points.

Round 4

This one is probably it for deciding who gets in the elimination rounds. He's playing 5cU with Tradewinds, Man-o-wars, a Derelor, Incinerates, Sex Monkeys, counters, and Lotus Vales.

Game 1: Disks mess him up bad, I triple-Incinerate him and drop the Hammer for the win.

Game 2: He sides in TEN cards against me, I'm not sure what's coming. How about COP:Red, Warmth, Chill, and Winter Orbs? He's ready for Sligh, anyway. He drops turn 2 WOrb--we exchange smacks for a while, but the Lotus Vales give him a big advantage and he beats me.

Game 3: One of the best games of Magic I've ever played. Winter Orb and COP:Red from him, can't get a Disk through, Impulsing like mad to get 'em. Do get a Rainbow, though, and then things start to roll my way. Rainbow smacks him down to five, he's only doing two with two Riders. He casts a third critter, and I feel I have to counter or the Riders will start killing all my land. I Dissipate (only counter in hand) dangerously and can't phase the Rainbow--which he then Incinerates. Ouch. But I drop a Disk, and he's out of Disenchants and has no counter in hand--the WOrb is gone, I untap like 20 land and just finish him with Hammer recursion. Whew. We are far and away the last pair to finish, so most of the room is watching this one.

Games 7-4-1, 22 points.

Elimination Rounds

Turns out my Round 4 opponent had really good tiebreaks and just made the Final 16. Good for him, glad that great match didn't cost him a spot.

Round of 16

Black/Red weenie/burn with 4 Cursed Scrolls. He had the advantage of knowing pretty much my whole deck beforehand, because he got to watch most of the fouth round.

Game 1: He wins the roll, drops turn 1 scroll. Bad, I figure I have to kill him fast or get a Disk. No Disk in sight, I hit with Sandstalker and he drops a second scroll. Ugh. He doesn't get many creatures, though, and those I burn. Start the Hammer, counter his burn, but finally die to 4 points of scroll damage every turn. Thanks.

Game 2: Side in both Shatters and the Hydros. Another Turn 1 scroll, but I have a Shatter in hand and kill it. He drops critters and beats, but I drop a Disk. He doesn't Shatter, which I know he sided in, but instead Torches me--I have enough for a counter, but not for the bonus 2 for the Torch. I apply with Sandstalkers after blowing the disk, but he has too much burn for me to counter it all, and he kills me with an 8-point Disintegrate when I'm finally out of counters and he has one more turn to live.

Final game record 7-6-1.

Didn't see all the rest, but I did see my Round 1 Sligh opponent take out my Round 4 opponent in the Round of 8, and saw a CMU player (playing textbook Necro, of course) win in the Round of 8. Got hungry, though, and decided to go home and have dinner with my wife rather than watch the end.

The Deck: "CounterByrne 1.0"

Land (25)
-----------
3 Quicksand
2 Reflecting Pool
1 Caldera Lake
1 Coral Atoll
7 Mountain
9 Island
2 Undiscovered Paradise

Creatures (4)
-------------
2 Viashino Sandstalker
2 Rainbow Efreet

Spells (32)
-----------
2 Disrupt
4 Counterspell
2 Dissipate
3 Dismiss
4 Impulse
2 Whispers of the Muse
2 Power Sink
4 Incinerate
1 Hammer of Bogarden
2 Earthquake
2 Kindle
1 Fireball
3 Nevinyrral's Disk

61 Cards

Sideboard (15)
--------------
2 Shatter
2 Flashfires
3 Suq'Ata Firewalkers
1 Tremor
2 Hydroblast
3 Pyroblast
2 Sleight of Mind
It needs a little tuning--Cursed Scrolls and Sligh are still a little too much, so I'm going up to 4 Disks (I only had three), and a third Whispers instead of the Kindles (two is stupid anyway). Sideboard will be only 1 Sleight and no Tremor, 3 Shatter and 4 Firewalkers.

Other Comments

A mediocre day record-wise, but fun anyway. Totally kick-ass day trading and buying, though, as the vendor was selling for half-price (Blood Moons for $1, Quakes for $2). A kid desperate for Nekrataals traded me the second Rainbow I used and a Sapphire Medallion for two 'Taals, which I thought was quite a deal. All kinds of other stuff, too, so it went well on that aspect.

Props

* All my opponents, for being friendly and good-natured. Must be that it wasn't a PTQ. In particular:
* My third-round opponent, for playing a quirky fun deck.
* My fourth-round opponent, for such a great match.
* Impulse. You are the card.

Slops

* My hubcap, which abandoned my car on the way to the tourney. Replacement hubcaps that match are hard to find for my car.
:-p
