Subject: NM State Championship Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 21:21:23 EST From: DSTYRDS@aol.com To: fkusumot@IX.NETCOM.COM Frank, Please post this for all those players in the lame State of New Mexico Hi all. I was crusing around the Dojo today and saw that their was no New Mexico state championship report to be found. Then, I remembered I finished 2nd, so i figured i would send one to the dojo. Here is the scoop. What I played: I ended up playing a modified version of Sligh, mainly because I felt that it had the best chance against the Academy and most other decks in the metagame. My true only fear was a good White Weenie. With the construction of the sideboard, at least I feel, this deck has a pretty good chance of victory against anything, including White. The Deck: 4 Jackal Pups 4 Mogg Fanatics 4 Ball Lightnings 3 Ironclaw Orcs 3 Fireslingers 4 Shocks 4 Kindles 4 Incinerates 2 Sonic Bursts 4 Cursed Scrrolls 2 Disenchants 12 Mountians 4 Cities of Brass 4 Wastelands 2 Plains Sideboard: 4 Pyroblasts (Academy, Regular Blue) 4 Meltdown (Academy, Bridge/Scroll Decks) 2 Disenchants ( To power up to 4 for any need) 2 Bottle Gnomes ( Sligh, Suicide Black) * 3 Humble ( The Bomb against big green things like Lurhgoyf and Argothian Wurm, and the pesky Paladin En-Vec and Preists. Can you say "humble the paladin, firesling him, DIE!!!" ?) The Field: The overall field at the NM state championship was great. Out of 44 players, 22 of them were kids new to the DCI. Outstanding !!! The decks were a variety of types: about 8 or 9 Fast green decks, 5 or 6 white weenie, 4 or 5 suicide black, 5 or 6 red decks (sligh, bridge red), 2 or 3 Academy decks, and the rest a bunch of decks with no true archtype. Round by Round Round 1 Don Atkison ( hope I spelled it right, Man) playing green elf with Cradles. Don is a good guy who shows up most of the time at weekly tournaments in Albuquerque. In games 1 and 2, red just proved superior over 1/1 elves. Both games were done in ten minutes. 1-0 Round 2 Played a kid with a U/W deck based around wall of Junk. Yeah that is right, wall of junk. Put it this way, he said he had only been playing three months. Game 1: All he played was two walls of junk, so I pecked him away with fireslinger and Pups. Burn to finish. Game 2: Side in 2 more disenchants. Had him down to 5, the he plays a flickering ward (Red) and a pariah on his Wall of Junk, with a precognition out to get rid of my disenchants. I couldn't win. All I could was laugh. Game 3: I waste him drifting meadow, leaving him with no white. Then the Jackal Pups served. Beatdown all the way. 2-0 Round 3: Eric Brewer playing a good Suicide black. Eric and I have played before, so i give him respect. Game one: He plays three sarcomancies off the one land he draws , I go on zombie patrol and let him kill himself. Game 2: side in 2 bottle gnomes. He plays three Erg raiders, and all I draw is shocks and ironclaw orcs. That' s just what i wanted. Game 3: See Game 2 2-1 Round 4: Some guy playing Show and Tell, M.O.M, Stasis combo. Game 1. He played nothing. I applied early beatdown. Game. Game 2: Sided in 4 Pyroblasts. He plays early Howling Mine, I draw 3 pyroblasts. Beatings. Game. 3-1 Fifth and final round. Played some Kid playing a janky sligh with raging goblins and giant strength. Looked like an exact copy of Long' s all Tempest red. Game 1: The kid is impatient and tries to gain advantage by putting giant strength and manacial rage on his creatures. I respond with an incinerate and a kindle to gain card and game advantage. The unkillable orc served for the win. Game 2. I guess the kid drew nothing, because I landed 2 Balls and ended the game with 22 life. Go Bottle Gnomes !!! 4-1 Final Eight ( I don' t remember the order of the players or more important their names. If anyone knows send them to the dojo.) 1.Kirk Rhoades (ME!!) - Sligh 2.Ran Bang - Sligh 3. Eric Brewer - Suicide Black 4. ? playing Red bridge based on 1st turn Ball with petals and diamonds 5. ? playing counterphoenix 6. ? playing Geddon/ Tradwind/ Argothian wurm. ( Good deck, guess so cause he beats me to Win) Sorry, I forgot your name, man. I was thinking about the game. 7. ? playing a wierd millstone/ alter deck with blue for counters and academy ( not a combo) 8. ? playing something. I have no clue, I was busy applying beatdown. sorry, guy. Quarterfinals: ME vs. Dr. Ran Bang. Ran is a good friend of mine. We both decided to play the wendsday prior to the tournament, after I showed Ran the way of the fireslinger. Who rocks the house? Fireslinger does!!! But I digress. Game 1: I end up seeing two scrolls with 7 or 8 mountians. Needless to say, I died. Game 2: side in the 2 "big Gnomes". Late game Ran plays his last card, Rathi!! I'm at 20 and Ran is at 18. Next turn I land a Ball (20-12). He draws, puts the beats, and says go (15-12). With one card in Ran's Hand , I play another Ball and it hits. Whew!! (15-6) Ran goes, applies Dragon beatings, and says go (10-6). I untap and relase my shock and sonic burst to win. Great game!! Game 3: I draw both sonic bursts over the course of the game, to pull it out. Sonic burst the Jackal pup rules. Sorry Ran. BRC For Life!!! 5-1 Semifinals ME vs the Red Bridge/ Ball deck. Game 1:He goes first, going Land, petal, petal, Ball. go. That's great. Within the next three turns, I play 2 orcs and he lets them live, otherwise choosing to throw his damage at me. Ends up with him drawing land and the orcs serve with whoopins. Game 2: Side in the meltdowns for scroll/bridge patrol. He goes first, going land, petal, diamond, Ball. Go. What the Hell! After that he draws one more land, 2 sonic bursts, and 2 or 3 more damage cards. I just die to the luck king. Game 3: I go first. Play a Mogg. Ball That!! After that he draws nothing and I finish him with damage and scrolls. On to the Finals. ME vs the Kid Playing Tradewind/ Geddon/ Wurm. Game 1: I don't Mulligan on a draw with 2 Cities of brass. What the Hell was I thinking. After that all I remember was Big Wurm. Game 2: Side in the 3 Bomb Humbles to kill that stupid Wurm. I apply early beatings, than he geddons. After that he plays a couple of walls and feeders, which stop my pup and mogg. Then the doom card, Absolute Law hits the board, followed by the Super Wurm. I never see more than 3 land, a disenchant, or a humble. All I Can do is Loose. Nice Drawing Kid, it was your day. Props n' Slops ( in the great tournament report tradition) Props: My friends Chris, Nick, Dan, Tom from Canada, and Ran for hours of Beatings. Wargames on Central, George, and Andrew for a great event The kid who played the wall/ward/pariah combo, who gave me a big enough laugh, i heard got beat up by a dancing scimiter with aspect of wolf on it. Now that's humor. Slops: All towards me: for taking the mulligan in the finals. RETARD!!!!!! And time I won't play with 4 Citie of Brass. What was I thinking? RETARD!!!! Have a Good one, Kirk Rhoades of the so-called "Team IHOP"
