For the unlucky people that don't know me my name is Jeff Lieberman AKA Lieber(the)man AKA (Order of Lieber)man AKA Lieber(man-o-war). On Saturday i went to the State Championships in Hartford. Having heard a little about Urza's except for the Academy I had no choice but to prepare for it. I first thought about Counter Phoenix but, lacked a 4th phoenix and had only one arcane labratory i thought it could not work. Then i thought about suicide black but realizes i can't win 2nd or 3rd turns without a hatred which i unfortunitly did not own. Then it dawned on me BIG BLUE Here's the deck i played: COUNTER MAGIC: 4x Counterspell 4x Forbid (Never bought back) 4x Dismiss 3x Mana Leak TOTAL: 15 Creatures: 4x Tradewind Riders (Borrowed had the worst curse on them) 4x Bottle Gnomes (Sligh ain't so cool) 1x Great Whale (Does not live up to its name) 1x Sophonomore (MVP!!!!!) 2x Ertai Wizard Edept (Laboratory Lock) 3x Mindless Automation (Awesome!!) 2x Wall of Tears (Should have been Thalokas Seers) 1x Silver Wyvern (Beatings!!!!!) TOTAL:18 Other: 2x Whispers 2x Legacy's Allure 1x Propaganda 1x Time Spiral (Make people think you are playing Academy :) 1x Arcane Lab (Lock Down!!!) TOTAL:7 Land: 1x Academy (Make people think you are playing academy prevents people from playing there own) 18x Islands Total: 19 Total Deck: 59 ( can't recall the final card to the deck but it didn't help anyways) Sideboard 4x Pyroblast (Sligh Sucks!!!!) 3x Jester's Cap (No Shard Phoenix or Academies for you) 3x Larry Niven's Disk (No academies stops death) 3x Chill (need an explantation?) 1x Hibernation (Stompie and Argothian worm ain't so cool.) 1x Stasis **TECH** (Tradewind lock) Total: 15 The deck:preformed very well for its first time out. The only problem with the deck was i could never stop shadow read on to find out why. I made on mistake during the tournement and it cost me the match. Although i have a low land count the deck never got mana screwed. During the day i played againist Round one: SLIVERS!!! Round two: Suicide Black Round three: Counter Phoenix Round four: Suicide Black Round five: White Weenie Round six: Green Red with large creatures and priests for huge amounts of direct damage early Round seven: Drop Anaylis of rounds: Round one:Slivers Game one: it goes back and forth for a while but then i get two active tradewinds down.Thats game although he gets me down to 9. Game two:He was land screwed but cast a first turn metalic sliver which over the course of the game dealt me 6 damage. I proceed to beat him like a red- headed step child. Record 1-0-0 Games 2-0-0 Round two: Suicide black Game one: this a terrible match-up for me. He goes first and rituals out a horror and an unholy armor. I manage to cast a bottle gnomes and a mindless automation. The turn before i die draw the all important tradewind(stupid curse). Game two: He cast lots of non-shadow creatures which i bounce or kill. The Sophmore keeps all his Erg Raiders tapped so he takes six a turn 2 from the Soph and 4 from Erg Raiders I smite royally. Game three: Ritual out a random creature with shadow and Duress. i don't remeber the rest but i die rather quickly. Record 1-1-0 Games 3-2-0 Round three: I play Derek, he has the coolest hair in the room on, so i wouldn't mind losing to him. Game one: we go back and forth for a while i then proceed to play both Ertai and the Lab with no counter in hand. He has only two mountains out but draws a phoenix and proceeds to take out Ertai and forbid locks me a few turns later. That was my only playing error during the tournement. Game two: First turn grindstone screws me over he mills my deck that rots. Record 1-2-0 Games 3-4-0 Between rounds me and 8 other dudes from team FNG decide to order 4 pizzas so we can get one free. Mark (Scrub) LaClare calls and the total comes out to be 147.50!!! WTF? what an idiot apparently they added it in to the previous order going to the same building. What a stupid moron. Round four:Some loser playing Suicide Black sorry dude but i will not lose to the same deck twice in one day. Game one: He gets an early lead but i manage to survive at 2 life.(Super Propaganda) Game two: Once again get an early lead disk clears the board. FUNNIEST MOMENT i have an untapped silver wyvern he attacks with a Sacromancy token. I block he Hatreds for 2 not one but 2. I counter and win shortly after. Record 2-2-0 Games 5-4-0 Another member of Team FNG Ray plays Derek from round three. Derek manages to tie with Ray because of time. Ray was playing Academy. Round four Jesse and Rick (Scrub) Stone both of team FNG play each other and since they did not Id in the first 5 minutes they have to play it out. Instead of just tying by taking mana burn they decide to just sit there for 70 minutes. Round five: he is playing white weenie that is another terrible match-up for me. Game one: Don't remember much except i don't deal any damage to him. He kicks my ass royally Game two: He gets me to ten with a priest and three scrolls and i proceed to play stasis i keep it alive for multiple turns but can't draw any tradewinds to keep the lock alive. Stasis dies and he plays 2 2/1 shadow creatures i play a disk on my turn and a propaganda. He disenchants the prop. I know that he cant kill me that turn so i wonder what the hell hes doing. He then Disenchants the other one ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! he brings me to 4 and i draw Another DISK DAMN!!!!. He kills me next turn. Record 2-3-0 Games 5-6-0 Last round: a rather unique game where he generates lots of early mana to play a fattie or fireball. Game one: The sophmore keeps his endless worm tapped Gnomes and Automation romp and stomp him. I did counter a 13 point fireball. Game two: He gets me down to 2 but i gain three with Gnomes and stay there. I had 2 tradewinds, an Ertai, a wall, and a semi great whale for the win. Final Record 3-3-0 Games 7-6-0 With an estimated 40% academy turn out i didnt face any. On a side note of the 10 people from team FNG only one made top eight as the 8th seed. But we got 9, 10,and my friend got 11th place. BTW Ross who got 11th place was playing Slivers with geddons and other cool stuff. Thanx to all who read this and Peace out!!!
