Ps. Sideboard sucks Two days before ago Ryan Rusaw came in from Regina, crashed on my couch and got me playtesting for the Central Canadian Regionals. Before he showed up I wasn't gonna bother paying the $25 to play. We hacked around with Godzilla and RTJ, I even built a Forgotten Orb deck for the Friday sanctioned. Rusaw tried to reconstruct Neville's deck part from memory part from Gurney's report from BC Regionals. We hacked around with it, changed it and fixed it so it would work in the environment up here. In the sanctioned Friday tourney me and Jesse Hajer both played RTJ into the finals where he inevitably smashed me into dirt. The competition was all Suicide Black. Suicide Black can't handle 4 green a turn. The Nev-Tech deck impressed me so much I kept it from close friends and playtest buddies so I could spring the second-turn Settlers on them a apply beatdown. On to the actual event. Wake up at 9:30am, tourney play starts in half an hour, wake up all my couch potatoes, shower myself and speed off to the tourney in time to find out it's only gonna start half an hour late. There was the usual pretourney sideboard scramble, racing to find boils and pyroblasts. Round 1 - Brian Mitchel 775258 0-2 I ended up playing a guy I know in the first round. I was hoping to play somebody I didn't know but I wasn't disapointed because I horribly underestimated him and got whacked two straight. 1: Swamp, Ritual, Black Weenie, Black Weenie, Unholy. I was mana-screwed. 2: First Turn tonnes of junk, I ritual a disk in a couple of turns and blow his junk up. He blows his load again and I bust it up with a Shard Phoenix then drop a Settler and nuke his land. He builds up more ween, and I can't bring the Phoenix back but I just drew Rusaw's supersecret anti-black Sideboard card… Stronghold Taskmaster GO! His ween chump block for a while, then top decks a Scalding Tongs and I die in 5 turns. Rusaw lost his first too and suggested we drop out then and there and play in the side tourneys. Round 2 - Mike Swistek(?) 708026 2-1 Don't know him, he was playing the I-Interdict-all-your-Settlers-while-I-beat-your-poor-ass-down-with-my-Man'o' War- Mono-Blue-Deck. How my deck lost to mono-blue is still a mystery. 1: see deck description 2: second turn Settler. Kill 3 islands. Strongdhold. Recurse Settler, wash, rinse, repeat. 3: see game 2 Round 3 - Thomas Hart 1286905 2-1 Playing fish with Spindrifts 1: die to 10 points a round on the 4th turn.. 2: second turn Settler. Kill your lands. Play something to kill him… 3: Mono-blue can't deal with the Settler early. He got the Abyssal beatdown. Round 4 - Clint Sitar 754124 2-0 Forgotten Orb(?) If it was Forb he didn't draw enough creatures but he had Mox Diamonds so he ended up edicting my Miners away and building up, I'd get a Miner, he'd Terror. The Disks didn't show up but neither did his Orbs, if he had any. He didn't look like he was having trouble casting anything but I didn't really get an idea of what his deck did. I think he had a Corpse Dance in it. Yeah he did… I wish I could have seen more of his deck but he never had a lot of land.. two, three tops. 1: long game comes down to my Stronghold and a Dwarven Miner. He lost too much land to comeback. I disked his Moxes away and topdecked a Settler. That Orc came back for seconds. I burnt him out. 2: I got Chilled. I've never played enough red in a tourney to have been chilled out before. He dropped it second turn but we both stalled out at 3 lands. He got a couple weenies and I ended up ritualing out a disk with a Pyro to back it. He Lobotomized my 'Quakes but the disk took out his ween. I think I boiled and he died. Round 5 - Shane Woloshyn 127352 2-0 Shane was playing a Donais/Tradewind Cross with Man'o'Wars and Birds 1: He didn't draw a wasteland for the Stronghold or a Dissipate for my miner.. the miner did it all, killed land, chump blocked and beat him down. Game MVP Dwarven Miner….11 lands destroyed. 2: His confidence was broken by the Miner in the first game, so when the Miner showed up with the stronghold he conceeded. He was nice enough to trade me a Living Death after the match. Oh, and Shane didn't play a Tradewind either game. Round 6 - Jesse Hajer 701128 Intentional Draw Niether of us were in for sure if we drew, but rather than nock the other guy out we drew and prayed to God. I've never done well against him but he was playing PudStyle, classic Blue/White Control. The Settler recursion should have beat him good. After the swiss the guy I needed to lose did and our draw paid off. Jesse and I were the only locals left but we made the cut and were into the top 8. I took a quick ride to Wendys for a fresh stuffed pita and got back just before they gave me a game loss. Round 7 - Nick Bonokosky 581847 2-1 5CKastle 1: I know he's gonna read this so… he got colour screwed in the first game and the Settlers didn't help that too much. He went Bird, I Incinerated. He went Maro, I Terrored. I beat him down with the Miners then Balled him out. 2: He was in full control. I dropped a disk, he went CrumbleMonkey, I went chump blocker, he went Man'o'war. I drew a ton of pyroblasts so he didn't get a Tradewind into play until he Deathed. I was fighting to get back into it for a while, but every time I had the oportunity to get an advantage thru blasting his Man'o'war he'd go Tradewind. Anyway, Living Death = I conceed 3: I don't rememeber how it went, except that 1 3rd turn perished away a Bird and two Walls of Roots but I think I ended up Balling him out again. Round 8 - Adam Hein(?) 0-2 5CG 1: This deck sucks under a Winter Orb. 2: I 'Quaked away his first two creatures and soon had the only creature on the board in a Phoenix. He Orbs me and goes Derelor. We exchange blows. He's really low but Derelor is real Fat. He goes Centaur, attack for 4. I'm at 6 he's at 9. I untap my 5th land. I 'Quaked for three but he Leaked me. I was going to attack, sac the phoenix to kill derelor then next turn untap and bolt him out. Winter Orb is my Bitch. In the end Jesse took first place and the cash but top 4 split the packs. The deck relies on the Stronghold recursing the must-deal-with creatures like the Settlers, the Miners and Abyssal Specters. I'm assuming Neville built the deck to beat control, and it does. Rusaw and I beefed up the creature control to handle the creature heavy environment. All of the decks attackers fly. Games usually end up in an Abyssal beatdown over his Walls of Blossoms. Neville didn't write up a report and as far as we know his deck has no name. During playtest we were calling it Nev-Tech. Here's the decklist…Krev-Tech 4 Orcish Settlers 3 Dwarven Miner 3 Shard Phoenix 3 Incinerate 2 Fireball 2 Earthquake 2 Hammer of Bogardan 1 Shatter 2 Bottle Gnome 4 Nevinyrral's Disk 3 Nekrataal 2 Abyssal Specter 2 Acidic Sliver 1 Terror 1 Crypt Rat 1 Dark Ritual 3 Rocky Tar Pit 3 Reflecting Pool 4 Sulfurous Springs 4 Swamp 4 Mountain 4 Wasteland 3 Volrath's Stronghold My sideboard sucked. My Ruinations acted like Armageddons, nuff said. I will say the Stronghold Taskmaster was shear genius on the part of the Mad Scientist Rusaw. Props Jesse Hajer for winning the whole damn thing Jason Paul for the playtests All the Regina Boys The guys who bought up my cards The word Tech for it's hours of fun Gregor for winning the 14 and under tourney and coming out with a box of Korean Tempest Phil for juicing all those kids for me Ryan Rusaw for the idea and the RTJ deck for the night before Finally to Neville for the deck Slops Suicide Black Mikey A for renting me that Janky T-shirt John Mansfield for being a hard-nosed prick thru the whole damn thing, and for throwing that kid out of hall for trying to buy cards.
