Date: Tue, 19 May 1998 09:23:24 -0400 From: Pat Callahan To: Subject: Regionals ----------------------------------------------------------------------- What is up! I will try to be as brief as possible since this was only Southeast Regionals. I arrived at the hotel with my "Cut-Throat Sligh" Just before the 1st round pairings were to be made. This was a problem because someone had my sideboard so I had to throw some crap together. I will give the real Sideboard, but I also want to give what it should have been. Here is the deck, which I have to accredit Eric Phillipps for. I am going to break it down into a mana curve. 1 Casters 2 Casters 3 Casters ---------- ---------- ---------- 4 Fanatics 4 Flunkies 4 Ball Lightnings 4 Pups 4 Incinerates 2 $andstalkers 4 $crolls 2 Fireslingers 4 $hocks 2 Mogg maniacs *4 Fireblasts Land 4 Wastelands 18 Mountains *is the actual Sideboard Sideboard* Sideboard 2 Chaos Charms 4 Cursed Totem 3 Pyroblast 4 Chaos Charms 2 Null rods(Ass) 4 Pyroblast 2 Boils 3 Mogg Maniac 1 Word of Blasting(Ass) 1 Mogg Maniac 4 other cards?(who cares) My first round match was the most difficult match that I played all day. It was against Randy Ellis, who was playing a Black Red deck. I think that I win most of the time against cause I am faster and because he just loses to cursed scroll. 1-0 2nd round I played a local whom I have played against many times. his Name Jerry Winkelstein and he was playing a Green Blue deck with White for support. I was winning the majority of the time, but he pulled off a game with maro-geddon.2-0 3rd round I played a guy whose name I do not remember. He was playing a Flagpole type deck and one game decided to hold the geddon tith a tradewind lock...*tsk* *tsk*3-0 In the 4th round I played some dude with a white weenie deck with Multi color land. as you can weel figure I did not see too much of his deck. 2nd game he got mana screwed...SCOOOOOOOP!4-0 5th round I played another Neutral Ground Atlanta player named Zack Heaven. When people saw his deck then asked how he was doing when he said 4-0 people's jaws dropped. His deck was a red Green Endangered Armadon deck. No creatures with toughness less than 2.5-0 In the 6th round I had the honor of being paired up with a greaseball whose name I don't care to know. He was playing some Blue deck wih gemstone mines. I straight serve him up first game in like 7 or 8 turns.2nd game my hand was kinda butty but I still managed to deal 12 points of damage or so. Then I cast a cursed scroll. The dude asks me if I am done so I say "Yup" then realizes he screwed up in not countering the scroll attempts to counter it. I say "no way dude" and he pitches a little hissy fit...what a douchebag.6-0 In the 7th round I played some dude from Alabama. He was playing a multi color white weenie with 4 Repentent blacksmiths and 4 Soltari Champions. This was my only match loss of the tournament. I got the worst draws against him ever. 1st game 4 mountains, 2 fanatics and a fireblast.oh well.6-1 This round was my most memorable of the day. I sat next to my friend Paul Webber(Who came in 4th) and my opponent was one who Paul had played against in the Junior Super Series in New York. Paul beat by casting 2 Forsaken wastes...heheh. Well he was playing a Chill, Propaganda, winter orb, cop red deck with enlightened tutorsto get them so he won one game.7-1 Now seeing as how I started 6-0 I was totally psyched to draw but I got paired up agaist a guy who llost his first round match by being late. So I had to play him. He was playing a mono-Black weenie deck with Poxes...so...well...umm you know.8-1 TOP 8 PAIRINGS 1 VS 8Two dudes I don't know. 4 VS 5Jay Schneider and Andrew Pacifico. 2 VS 7Me and Koby Kennison. 3 VS 6Paul Webber andn Chris Donahoe Koby was playing a bolt deck with multi lands for his Side board. Ultimately he ended up haveing to bolt my creatures so he could not kill me.9-1 TOP 4 PAIRINGS Me VS Paul Webber Jay Schneider VS The 15 Year-old dude Paul was playing 5-color black and has fought me many times before. Unfortunately for paul it is almost impossible for him to beat The red deck...barring mana screw.1st game 5 minutes. 2nd game 6 minutes.10-1 FINALS Me VS Jay Schneider Jay was playing his modified sligh deck which exchanges speed for sideboard capabilities by taking out fireblasts and mountains for multi land. 1st game he is disadvantaged against me because I am so much faster than he is. I would love to write a detailed, Play-by-Play reaport of the 2nd game so I will. Jay played land while I killed him. I think that it is neat that there were 2 15 year olds and a 16 year in the top 8. I was the youngest though, because the other 15 year old's birth day was in June or July. Pat Callahan
