Subject: mountain Regionals Report Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 17:58:02 EDT From: Not4You 22 To: FKusumot@ix.netcom.com Hello All, as much as I like playing magic, Ive never really liked writing reports, but I figured why the heck not... I got up at about 6:30 Saturday morning and headed out of my lovely new Provo home for the great Salt Lake City, Home of the (Were gonna lose to the bulls again) Jazz. After dealing with massive constrution on I-15 I get to Salt Lake right about 7:30, which isnt that bad coming from Provo, but then after going thru the rat maze that they call down town I actually arrived at the tourny at about 8:30. I walk into the room where they had the reg desk set up and find that there are only abopt 30 people there, oh well, easy day comes to mind. Boy was I wrong. Reg was soupposed to end at around 9:30 and at 10:15 they closed the computer. So here we go Im playing a deck that some of my friends from Cali built, and I did the tuning to. As it turns out my sideboard is completly different than the ones that they played in Cali. Ill give a deck list at the end. Round 1 I dont know who the person I was soupposed to play was but the computer crashed and we all headed over to Cross Roads to get some grub. Round 1 Re-Do (Let me apologise to everyone right now whos names I have forgotten, I was not planning on writing a report so Im doing this completly from memory) I cant remember his name Playing Slgih Game One He plays a mountain and then a Pup and I think to myself "awsome". The deck Im playing was desigind to beat sligh and 5cG, So im happy to be playing a sligh deck. I drop a forest and say go, he goes mountain, attack for two, Pup, Pup. Ut oh. I drop swamp say go, He drops mountain plays ball lightning attack for 12.. Hummm I lose Game two Opening hand is pretty good. I drop City and say go. He drops mountain pup. I drop refelecting pool and wall of roots. He plays a mountain and says go. I play Island and using the wall Tradewind rider. He plays mountain and attacks with the pup, I figured what the heck, block with the rider and he incinerates it. Ok, Drop a forest play peaches (Spike feeder) and Hermit Druid. at this point he probably should have killed the druid. Next turn use druid, put like 15 critters in my graveyard, cast Living Death. At this point I have 2 riders and like 15 points of damamge on the table, 2 turns later hes dead. Game three He gets a quick start but doesnt kill the second druid. I get some critters in my grave yard but no LD yet. I play a couple walls and get Corpse Dance, peaches going at the end of every turn, So im up to like 30 life when I cast living death. He has 2 critters in his graveyard to my 9. The game didnt last long after that. 1-0 Round 2 (Sorry again) Red Green Suqata lancer Centaur Thing Game one Ya know, I know that your soupposed to put strategy in tourny reports, so heres my advice for playing this deck against anything with out counters in it... Let them kill your critters, use bottle gnomes and peaches to stay alive, get a LD either by drawing it or casting intuiton for it and then win the game. If they cant stop the LD they lose, plain and simple. He got a qucik start in the first game and killed a bunch of my quick critters, oh no, turn 6 LD and the game was over. Game two I felt really bad for this guy in this game. Turn 2 I made a hermit driud and he killed it, turn three I made a hermit druid and he didnt kill it, I use hermit druid at the end of turn four and get a land on top of my library, oh well, I use it again at the end of turn 5 and go thru about 3/4 of my deck. Cast LD and have 90% of my critters on the board. He sits there and looks at the board for about five minutes and then says Go... Poor guy, that was the best LD I had all day. 2-0 Round 3 (Kyle Boyd, Really cool LV dude) Donias 5cU Game one I get some really quick beat down on him with peaches and bottle gnomes, he cast fifth turn wrath of god, I cast fifth turn LD, and wisdoms a couple times and cast wrath of god on turn 7 I counter, he counters, I counter.. Good game Game two This game was wacky. I cast a fourth turn tradewind rider that slips past his counters, he gets more land out and says go, I cast a peaches, he cast wall of blossoms, Ok, I attack for one with the rider and he cast another wall of blossoms so at the end of his turn I move both counters from peaches to the now mighty 3/7 rider. I attack for 3 and say go. Next turn he cast wrath of rider, I counterspell, he dissipates, I pyroblast. I attack for three more. Next turn he cast wrath of god, I counter, he dissipates, I pyroblast. Humm.. I attack for 3. Next turn he casts fireball for 7 on the rider, I mana leak... The game went on from there with him using the wisdom once, but eventully the massive tradewind beat him down. 3-0 Round 4 (Guy from Colorodo) Black Blue Counter Lobotomy Game one He counters my first couple critters and cast Lobotomy on the fifth turn and gets LD. Oh well. He casts a Rainbow and beats me down with it, Lobotomy again and gets counterspells, I sit there and look at my 2 Necrataals in my hand as the Rainbow cuts me apart, Game two I side in 3 Pyros and 2 mana leaks, and as Im siding I watch him Mana Stack his deck the old way Two cards land, one card land, two cards land.. etc. So when he gives me his deck to cut I do what any magic player would do. I 3 pile it. When I give it backs he asks if he can shuffle again and I tell him by DCI rules that he cannot. He mulligans. Shuffles some and draws six, and says hes ok. I start out quickly with a third turn peaches, and then a fourth turn humpmonkey that he tried to counter but I pyroed. As I get the beatdown going, he editcs me twice and I counter one ABout 10 turns later peaches finshes the beatdown. Game three He mulligans twice and goes first. The game didnt last long, second turn wall, third turn rider, forth turn wall counter the pate, bounce an island. Lock. 4-0 Round 5 (Richi Vala, another cool LV guy) 5cG Game one Hes talking about not wanting to stick around for the top eight because he has some ho to go after, I understand completly but they say that if your not there to draw in rounds seven and eight that thell DQ you, oh well, he was gonna have to wait to get laid. He gets a good start and I get mana screwed. He places beatdown upon me and I had two lands in play at the end of the game. Game two In goes sacred ground. He never sees it this game tho. I have a druid going from turn two and on turn five he taps out for a tradewind rider, Im guessing armageddon next turn so I cast lving death, He looks at my graveyard as I pull about 10 critters out of it. He dies about 4 turns later. Game three He has two tradewinds and a humpmonkey and I have no critters in my graveyard, I cast Sacred ground. Hes never seen this card before and swears alot about it. Next turn I cast LD just to kill his TradeWinds and he bounces one back to his hand. He tries to recast it next turn But I counter. and then I drop the bomb. Silver Wyvern hits the table, He tries to man-o-War it 4 turns later, But I redirect it back at Man-o-War. Good games 5-0 Round 6 (Keith Ouellette, another cool LV dude) SixPack Game One Its a simi good game, I get rid of some shadow critters on turn 6 with an LD and then lock him down with a rider. Peaches and humpmonkeys finish him off He takes a restroom break in the middle of these two games.. More on that later Game two In goes the Light Of Days. This game He gets a good jump on me with some shadow beat down. I take control of the game with a light of day around turn 10. He had all the damage he needed to kill me the next turn, I had to intuiton for a white producing land and then backed up the LOD with a counter. We sit there for a while and I kill off a couple of Man-o- Wars that hit the table. And then like an idiot I block a Man-o-war with a humpmonkey putting the monkey on top of my graveyard and on top of my peaches, Oh well, I figured Ill just cast corpse dance next turn and get rid of it, but Im at 3 life and Keith drops a fellwer stone which is his first red mana of the game and bolts me. Good game Game three Again he gets the quick beatdown with shadow critters and I have not enough mana. Some peaches and humpmonkeys and tradewinds slow him down but he really has me on the ropes. I have a graveyard full of critters and Im going to die the next turn so I cast intuition at the end of his turn. My first thought was Light of Day so I could counter anyhting that he tried to do with it but I only have two LOD in my library, So I say screw it and grab LD. During my upkeep on the next turn I activate a hermit druid I have in play and put 10 more critters into my graveyard before getting a land. I cast the LD and just sit there. He looks around, Looks at my graveyard and says OK. He has two MOW in his graveyard but I had two taals, He dies next turn to the 24 points of beatdown 6-0 Round 7 (Sammy B) Sligh I decide to be a nice guy and draw with Sammy hoping that I might play him sometime in the final 8. We play a couple of fun games anyway and I crush him. 6-0-1 Round 8 (Sorry) Sligh I did the math already and i figrued another sligh deck in top eight helps my chances of winning 6-0-2 So the top eight looks like this 1. 5cg 2. Sligh 3. Peaches and stuff (Me) 4. 5cg 5. Sligh 6. Sixpack 7. Sligh 8. 5cg Humm, Out of the top decks 6 of them my deck was desigined to beat so of course I have to play Keith again in the first round. Game 1 Game one was rather quick, I got somewhat manascrewed (No blue at all) and he beat me down with shadow critters. Oh well, In goes the light of days again. Game 2 He has me beat, theres no way I can win this game, Wait a second is this a light of day? Cast light of day, counter the counter and hold four more counters in my hand. I had to deal with a couple of MOWs again but in the end peaches put on the beatdown. Game 3 I get mana screwed. I guess it wasnt as bad as I make it sound, but I needed one more land to cast LD. I found out after the game that he had 3 charms in his hand but no counter spell. I dont know If I would have one given one more land, but hey, I actually didnt care. Keiths a cool guy and I figured he would win the tournament if he beat me, I should have been right. End of day 6-1-2 I think the funny thing about myslef and Keith is that we went 3-3. He just happend to win his 50% in the top 8. =) Keith ended up losing to a really bad Mana Screw in the finals.
