Subject: Tourney Report: Regionals Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 17:28:48 -0700 From: Jeff Cunningham To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hey Frank. This is actually by Adam Locke-Norton, written from the address of Jeff C. Might I also note that I would not have written a report had it not been for prodding from Jeff, so please send all hate mail to him. I had been to a small store tourney with my "Black $mack" deck the week before the regionals, and did relatively well. At that point I was strongly considering playing it although it was a pretty crazy deck. You can see for yourself. The deck (as played to regionals) 4 Foul Imp 4 Dauthi Horror 4 Dauthi Slayer 4 Sarcomancy 4 Sewer Rats 3 Nekrataal 1 Kezzerdrix 1 Kaervek's Spite save me burly! 1 Reckless Spite 2 Necropotence 3 Funeral Charm 4 Unholy Strength everyone laughed at me. Look who's laughing now... 4 Dark Ritual Got there early with Jeff C. and Jasar E. to trade. We meet up with Julian Fane, "sideboard" poster boy. He thinks this'll be the easiest tournament since "Pro Tour: Julian's Back Yard". Boy was he wrong.......tournament 30 minutes late as always.. There are 105 people there. Everyone from Mishra's, Round 1 - Peter Radjonic (5cg) Game 1 Early creature beats gets him down to 7. I'm losing momentum, so i lay the necro i was holding while he hits with a maro. i necro for 6. I chump block with a sarco and after combat he (gasp) armageddons, him being at five life and me being at 11. Now the only creature i have is a foul imp and he has a maro and a centaur. I untap, play land, dark ritual, unholy funeral charm my foul imp and deliver the kill. Game 2 He mulligans down to four, and can't really get things going. games: 2-0 matches: 1-0-0 Round 2 - Dan Baker (Red Burn with Atogs?!?!) Game 1 He goes first and inflicts pain with a jackal pup and a fireslinger. I get a couple of slayers and a foul imp and a sewer rat. I play a strength on my sewer rats, and just keep on attacking. At this point, he has no creatures and he draws into a CRAPLOAD of burn. He picks off all my creatures except the rat (wtf?) and the rat just kills him. Game 2 He plays some early weenies but I play more and I have a reckless spite. That's the only damage i take. Hilights of the game: he fireblasts a dauthi slayer but doesn't fireblast the other slayer that has 2 unholies on it. And people call me random.... games: 4-0 Matches: 2-0-0 Round 3 - Andrew Thompson (W/G with armors and a lot of strange cards) Game 1 I lay on a smacking while he plays lots of land and gets things nekrataaled. Game 2 Ritual, gloom, game. games: 6-0 matches: 3-0-0 Round 4 - Greg "the mox monger" Gilks (rogue deck with many funky cards) Game 1 He doesn't draw enough multi lands, but he is able to hold off my horde with a tradewind and a man-o-war on my sarco token. Reckless spite solves this little problem. Game 2 Mana screwed opponents are no fun. games: 8-0 matches: 4-0-0 Round 5 - Kyle Milsner (big blue w/ flood and lobotomy) Game 1 A ritual start pushes him to the edge. He starts to regain control, but a little too late (as he is already down to 7). Game 2 He man-o-wars a pit imp twice the gets tradewind/ophidian action going. I concede. Game 3 I play a third turn sarcomancy. He plays a manowar, two ophidians, a tradewind, a flood, and three air elementals. I am very dead. Shoulda mulliganed... games: 9-2 matches: 4-1-0 Round 6 - Scott Springman (4 colour something....black or something) Game 1 His deck doesn't serve up anything until turn 3, while i get my second best draw of the tournament (ritual, sarco shadow, shadow, unholy imp, finish with kaervek's spite). Game 2 His hand was all spells, but all removal. My hand was creatures and a necro (which I did't even need). It takes all of six turns for him to die. games: 11-2 matches: 5-1-0 Round six saw the elimination of Jeff and Jasar, both 4-2. Rory Johnston, however, prevailed, and needed only to win his last match to make the round of 8. Round 7 - Mike "Macpheeb" Macphee (counter sliver) His DCI ranking shows his name as Macpheeb. Those wizards people have proabably been sniffing glue again.... I offer him the draw, but he declines. Later, I found out if I had drawn, he would have made it and I wouldn't have. Game 1 My creatures fly at him and I see only a wall from his side and a sliver or two. Then....kaboom! Wrath obliterates my forces and phatty slivers kick my ass. Last turn to live, I kaervek's spite him. Counterspell. Ouch. Game 2 I excercise my voodoo powers on his deck. He doesn't get enough land to counteract my wastelands x2. Game. Game 3 I excercise my voodoo powers on his deck. He mulligans and dies one turn away from dropping a light of day. PHEW! games: 13-3 Matches: 6-1-0 Rory didn't make it. Too bad, man. Top 8 1-Mike Gurney G/U tradewind, wall, spike feeder, geddon 2-Me Some crappy black deck or something 3-Peter Grauer W/U Control 4-Song Ly W/U Control 5-Kyle Misner U/b Flood good stuff 6-Gary Louie Red Creatures and wall destruction 7-Paul Kranabetter Bushwacker 8-Shane Neville "Neville Tech" (can't be revealed, it's top secret) It's double elim for 6 invite spots. Paul Kranabetter Game 1 I do what my deck is best at. Smack smack smack. Game 2 Things are going well. Excellent draw. He goes third turn intuition for light of day, fourth turn light of day. I immediately concede. Game 3 I come out really fast, charming his birds and wasting his multi lands so he can't drop that bomb. He's at 6, I have 2 foul imps and a shadow guy. He draws....it's a light of day. He plays the multi land he was holding back and casts it. Wow. You're pretty good. I guess i lose. I suddenly realize my deck sucks harshly. Either that or light of day is kinda bad. Anyways, I'm kind of mad going into the next match against.... Pete Grauer Game 1 I play one too many creature, and wrath clears the board. Avenging angel hits the table, he wisdoms, this game is beyond winning. Game 2 Wasteland, wasteland, wasteland. Jeff turned his back to do a one for one trade. When he turns around again the game is over. I love dark ritual. Game 3 First turn ritual forsaken wastes. Creatures fly and shadow towards him. His last turn to live, he's at 1 and he's starting to pack up his cards with one hand while drawing with the other. He appears stunned. He attacks me down to four, and fireballs me for just enough without having to tap his city. The only fireball in his deck. Now it's my turn to appear stunned. I never saw a red card until then. I can feel the following magic cards manifesting themselves: seething anger, fit of rage, berserk, boil, bitterness (hold on, that's not a real card.....) I get the privilege of signing his fireball with "I was top decked". Wow. Let's flip coins for money. Who knows, maybe my opponent will flip 45 heads in a row. Oh well. For all my trouble i get a few packs of magic and i draft for fun. I lose (i got top decked of course). Oh yeah.....to Ryan Humber (of Team "Nader's Left Nad") if you read this I want you to know that copying decks from Adam and Jeff, and adding green for stampeding wildebeests isn't cool. It is cool, however, to go 2-5. You did almost as good as the monkey that plays cards at random from its hand. The Good: Wastelands- MVP. If you draw more than 1, it's hard to do badly. Erik Lauer- Your deck was the basis for the one I used. Pete Grauer- For drawing that fireball. Mark Tseng- Erik Lauer juniour......always playing some wacky deck or another The Bad: 8 packs for getting 7th out of 105? Come on people! Julian- for going 0-6-1. You said you were a badass, but you were just bad and ass. Pete Grauer- For drawing that fireball Wizards- For printing light of day. BASTARDS! Mana screw- Jesus people! Start playing with more land! The Ugly: Julian's haircut, glasses and puffy vest. Ryan Humber. Need I say more? Thank you for reading this lengthy document. Adam "Grauer's Bitch","I'm going to trade for every goddamn light of day in the whole freaking world" Locke-Norton karen
