Subject: TX Regionals Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 21:14:59 -0700 From: Ryan Fischbeck To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com 'sup all Well it's sunday, and I just woke up from my post Drive nap ( 5 hours of sleep in 2 days is some bad.) and figured i'd attemp to write this report, even though my memory has somewhat failed me. Anyway enough of my incoherent babbeling and let get started. Also please forgive my spelling and the length of this report. Me and Chris got to the ramada about 7 am to try and get some playtesting done before regestration started. While I was playing some random dude Leland Simmons and Jeff Clarke tell me to side heavy anti red, b/c it looks like it will be a hot day. Aginst my better judgement I play 5cU with shard pheonix, since it did so well last week at the Browser 500 ( 3rd place ). I finish altering my board and go regester my deck, then hang out a while till parings start. Round 1 Daniel Algood 5 color Sliver Game 1 : Strong early start with wall of blossoms and counters. I get early dominance and he concedes when I get double wisper action going. Game 2 : Battle of the blasts. I get great draw 3 wrath 2 counterspells, pool, adakar. I proceed to grab 2 land. The is probly one of the best games i have ever played. Control swings back and forth b/c he has a stronghold. He gets me to 3 but i show my topdecking skills ( Read : Got Lucky ) and pull wrath. During this game I lobotomied his pyro blasts and mana leaks. Also shard pheonix saved my ass during the mid game. 1-0 Round 2 John Elder 5c Sliver Game 1 : First turn mox, gemstone acidic. This is the same deck as last round save diamonds and geddon. I go into defence mode and get him down to one sex monkey. I counter his queen ( note both decks had 3 Queens ). Then he suprises me and geddons and then attacks i'm at one. I have land that i was saving for wisdom fodder, but no way to deal with monkey in hand, i then demonstrate how luck i am and pull quicksand. WOW!!!. He dosent force the quick sand, and i then drop wall, counter a few slivers then wisdom to 13. He concedes soon after. Game 2 : Sideboard time. This game lasted all of 5 min. He gets early creature rush counters wrath, i lose. Game 3 : This game looks good with him having only 1 pool as land, but soon turns worse. my hand is fine, and i have 2 walls to his one muscle, when he goes lobotomy me counter. next turn lobotomy : counter. this procedes twice more, except the last one went off he pulls my wraths, i lose. 1-1 Round 3 ???? Flying Beatdown ( mono U, well sorta ) Game 1 : he lays island, i'm like looong game time. Heres what happens : Me ten land all blue producing hand is counter, counter, counter, dismiss. Him 7 mana counting diamonds (some muti color so but ive only seen blue so i'm thinking sided perish and disenchant. ) tap 2 WORB me counter, him pyroblast???? what is this ok whatever counter hime pyro. WHAT. me counter again him pyro again, ok fine dismiss, him disrupt WHAT THE F***. I now have no hand and am tapped out with worb, so i lose. Game 2 : Paris, Paris. Him turn 2 worb counter my disenchant, counter my monkey drop rainbow. oh well at least i can play in side tournaments. I play in a korean visions and get 3rd, but no prize. I do a little trading, then get sign up with a group of guys for team sealed. Teams are : Houston Fruity Ass ( me ) Oklahoma A Oklahoma B Now heres the deal with the team sealed. My team get good cards, but the only playable rares we get are tongs and mawcor. I settle on U/W control with three decoy, 2 capsize, and wisper as the only highlights. My only pinger was mawcor. Round 1 Oklahoma B My team goes 5-0 quickly, so i go check up on houston. Mason and Leland are done already so i go talk to them. They start talking about how awesome their opponents ( Oklahoma A ) decks are, they have 4-5 Rolls 2 Fan the flames, Crovax, Fevered, 3 capsize, 2 wisper, Tradewind, 4 Endangered Don, ect. ect. ect. Mason goes to complain, and i sit down for my second round. Round 2 Oklahoma A I play vs their controll deck and manage to scrape up a win due to my opponents bad luck with paris muligan. I know i would have lost if he had gotten better draws. In fact i lost the second game and had NO permenents at all on the board. After this my team also goes to complain. The judges wont even do a deck check, in fact they tell us NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT!!! WHATEVER. they cough up a box of tempest starter as second place which my team wins. note there was noting good in the whole box except one intuition. both of our teams are pissed that the judges didnt care at all and are preparing letters of complaint at this moment. BTW oklahoma B had 0 playable rares seen by both our tem and team Houston, go figure. All in all it was a fun day, except for the Team Challenge. TEAM OKLAHOMA is nothing but a band of cheaters. Props All the players except Oklahoma : Everyone I played was in a good mood and having fun. Jokes were abundant and the whole trip was great except for one little blemish. Ryan Moffit : Thanks for letting us run up your room service bill. Chris Ferrell : For driving the POS truck to Dallas since my car was out of inspection. Slops Edward Fox : For not caring at all about BLATENT cheating, even though the two non oklahoman teams complained multiple times. If not for this I would have been complementory. Ramada Inn : For having a fire in the middle of round 6. ( i was in someones room at the time. ) The 1 Dealer : for stand up on a table to anounce that you would pay $3 for tradewinds/ Pools, and $5 dollars for scrolls.
