Subject: Tourney Report: Lincoln, NE Regionals Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 01:22:59 EDT From: HB255 To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com This is my first attempt at writing a report for The Dojo. I've been playing for about 3 years now, playing tournaments for one of those years. This was only the 2nd Regional competition i had been to. My final record was 2-2 before i decided to drop and go play booster draft. Here is my little fishie deck: 13x Island 3x Quicksand 2x Stalking Stones 2x Wasteland 2x Svyelunite Temple 4x Cursed Scroll 4x Tidal Warrior 3x Spindrift Drake 4x Manta Riders 4x Lord of Atlantis 4x Impulse 2x Legacy's Allure 4x Mana Leak 2x Memory Lapse 4x Counterspell 2x Mana Severence 2x Manowar -------- 61 Cards Sideboard: 4x Hydroblast 3x Chill 3x Phyrexian Furnace 2x Wall of Tears 2x Interdict 1x Wasteland Note: This is not what my deck would have been ideally. My sideboard was constructed in a span of about 45 seconds, as we arrived onsite around 5 minutes before registration ended. First round, i faced what i had expected to face, black weenie. I was prepared. First game, i got out two Tidal Warriors (those ended up winning me a couple games throughout the day) and cut off his black mana. 2nd game, he Mulliganed 3 times, each time getting a single Wasteland, so the game was more or less mine anyway. Not the way i really wanted to start the day, but nonetheless. Record:1-0 Second round, i regretted immidiately not frequenting the Dojo more. Donias 5c. Had i been more careful, i probably could have spotted it early on, and rather than attempt to stall with Tidal Warriors, i could have applied beatdown. Unfortunately, i chose to make the Cities islands rather than attack, a decision that ended up costing me the game after 55 minutes. The 2nd match was a mess. My opponent suprised me however, and played just as fast as i was. Before time was called, i got him down to 6, but that's how life goes. Record: 1-1 Lunch. Bad Chinese. Back to the tourney. Third Round. My second and last win. I faced of against a member of Team TCG. This was the type of professional player i mock. Nothing against him, or anyone else, but he was the typical "i-don't-show-emotion-even-when-i-see-a- dead-cat-in-the-road" player, also starting each sentence with "Well, i've been in the Pro Tour, and...". . First two were Scroll wars, 3rd he got screwed while I drew the god hand for my deck. Still have not had an opportunity to play Mana Severence. Record: 2-1 Fourth Round. Hugest loss. Opponent was a really great guy, talked, chatted. A human being. Pounded me into the ground with a Pox deck i was completely unprepared for. My fault anyway. I drop, and go onto play a couple rounds in a side Rochester Draft tourney. Final Record:2-2 Overall, the tournament was quite well organized. I do have one minor complaint, though. Call me unusual, call me bizarre, but i just don't like seeing members of The Crew down there all the way from Chicago just because they don't like their local competition. 250-300 in Lincoln, Lord Knows How Many (probably 750-1000) in Chicago. You do the math. In retrospect, if i had it to do over again, i would probably go rabidly anti- Scroll/Gnome/Disk, drop the Drakes and Scrolls, and run 4 Worbs and 3 Null Rods. I also would have made a REAL sideboard, obviously. Finally, i would have taken Friday off of work, and gotten more than 2 hours of sleep, as the system can only take so much caffeine before saying "Ok, that's it, we quit" resulting in a collapse. (Note to self: No more Frappucino/No- Doz/Surge/Gatorade/Coffee shakes before tourneys, the rapid convulsions are distracting. Distracting..actually, Note to Self: Scratch last note, new note: Do not forget Frappucino/No-Doz/Surge/Gatorade/Coffee shake for Exodus Prerelease). Oh, almost forgot: WHY NO OLATHE REGIONALS? Kansas City is getting screwed like George Costanza at the car dealership. This business of 4 hours just to have a shot is preposterous. Something's rotten in the state of Missouri. In closing, i would like to say that although i scrubbed out 4th round, and had other minor problems crop up....i enjoyed myself, and that's all that really counts.
