Subject: Extended White Weenie Date: Thu, 27 Nov 1997 13:31:27 -0500 From: Michael Bowen I've been working on a white weenie deck to play in the qualifiers. Why white weenie? Two reasons: 1) It can pack both Disenchants and Auras giving it a fighting chance against Prison decks and Pros Bloom. 2) Crusades, Protection from Red creatures and Honorable Passages help a lot against burn and Sligh. That leaves Necro being the other big concern. An early Land Tax should help prevent any problems Hymns might cause - after that I think it's an even game. So here's the deck. It's very tight, low land count, lots of low casting cost critters. One big question I have is about the Cursed Scrolls. In the right situation they are THE BOMB but sometimes they are unreliable. My first qualifier is December 6th so I don't have much time to work the kinks out of this one. 4 Icatian Javelineer 4 Icatian Infantry 4 Infantry Veteran 4 Soltari Priest 4 Order of the White Shield 4 Crusade 1 Call to Arms (Heh!) 4 Land Tax 2 Tithe 4 Lightning Bolts 2 Cursed Scrolls 4 Disenchant 2 Armageddon 1 Mountain 1 Island 1 Plateau 1 Tundra 13 Plains Sideboard: 2 Mind Bend 3 Aura of Silence 2 Honorable Passage 3 Swords to Plowshares 3 Pyroblast 2 Armageddon Now I know the land mix looks like a recipie for mana screw but with four Land Tax and two Tithes it works okay. I've never suffered a double mulligan in playtesting. I could use more dual lands but I think that many decks will be running four Wastelands and so it's risky to play more with so tight of a mana ratio. The sideboard probably needs some work. I think the Mind Bends are essential. I'd love to drop blue out of the deck altogether but Gloom makes Mind Bend a neccessity. And putting the StPs in the sideboard is a metagame call. Other than Erhnams and maybe things like Waterspouts, I don't expect to see many large creatures at all except Ishan's and Wildfires which StPs are useless against anyway. Okay, here's the best I've been able to come up with. Rip it apart. Tell me why it's a poor metagame choice, tell my why there's a better way to build a white weenie deck. I need to know the hard truth folks so don't spare my feelings! :) - Michael Bowen
