Subject: [G-TECH-L] 2 PTQ Decks Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 14:38:52 -0400 From: Bennie Smith Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Hello, all! There's a single slot Rome PTQ right here in Richmond, VA on Oct 3rd, and I am going to attend and give Rath Constructed a try. Not wanting to play the same ol' same ol', I've been tinkering around with an original deck, and modifying a Counterphoenix deck. Submitted for your review and input: U/B Recurring Nightmare deck ("Turbo Intuition") 4 Recurring Nightmare 4 Intuition 4 Forbid 3 Diabolic Edict 1 Dark Banishing 1 Whispers of the Muse 1 Capsize 3 Dauthi Horror 3 Merfolk Looter 4 Manakin 3 Gravedigger 3 Tradewind Rider 3 Scrivener 3 Reflecting Pool 2 Rootwater Depths 1 Volrath's Dungeon 9 Island 8 Swamp Sideboard: 3 Bottle Gnomes, 3 Thalakos Drifter, 2 Capsize, 2 Whispers, 4 Oath of Ghouls, 1 Tradewind Rider The idea is to use Intuitions and Recurring Nightmares to get some graveyard recursion going. Intuition for the Scriveners, cast one, get back your Intuition. Intuition for your Capsize, an Edict/Banishing, and a Tradewind. Use Recur to bring Tradewind out, or trade Scriveners to get your Capsize or Edict in hand. Wash, rinse, repeat. Use Gravediggers and Scriveners to prime your hand for Forbid buyback. May be a little slow, that's why I'm trying the Manakins, though Bottle Gnomes or Watchdogs might be a better bet-- what do you think? Next up -- Phoenix Oath ("Turbo Mana Burn") 4 Shard Phoenix 4 Oath of Mages 4 Intuition 4 Forbid 3 Mana Leak 3 Counterspell 2 Dismiss 4 Shock 1 Mogg Fanatic 3 Capsize 2 Scroll Rack 3 Reflecting Pool 14 Island 9 Mountain Sideboard: 3 Mogg Fanatic, 3 Portcullis, 3 Thalakos Drifter, 3 Shattering Pulse, 1 Dismiss, 2 Ertai's Meddling Pretty much Buehler's Counterphoenix, post-Lisbon, with the "improvements" of adding Oath of Mages. I know, it might be presumptuous to try and improve Buehler of all people, but I really think Oath of Mages would work in this. I pulled two lands (down to 26 land, ) and two counterspells... the reasoning being I could afford to let an early creature through that could do some early damage to me, so long as I eventually got control of the board and could play an Oath of Mages, turning that damage taken into damage for my opponant. Any input on this "innovation" is appreciated! Bennie Smith Guerilla Tech Mage
