Subject: [DECKS] The MD/VA Scene Date: Tue, 09 Jun 1998 15:20:04 -0400 From: Teri and Pete Ripley To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hello, this is Iron Peter Ripley bringing you a large amount of decks known and played in the MD/VA area. I was thinking I would give it all to you at once instead of little bits and peices. The decks following this are all tournament level "Expert" decks. They have all had some success in small and large tournaments. I figured I would give you a taste of the Mid-Atlantic Magic scene, so here it is. I will start off with the deck that I qualified for regionals with, sligh. Sligh is one of the most popular decks in the area. There are a couple of different ones you could play but the one we have currently is more of a creature based one, meaning that it is more offensive than the two ball lightning sligh I brought you befor. So here it is. 4 Ball Lightning 4 Mogg Fanatic 4 Jackal Pup 4 Mogg Flunkies 4 Ironclaw Orcs 2 Suq'Ata Lancer 1 Rathi Dragon 4 Incinerate 4 Shock 3 Fireblast 1 Firestorm 4 Cursed Scroll 4 Wasteland 17 Mountain The sideboards will be left up to you. Like I said, very basic. The only thing special is the one firestorm, mainly for Black Weenie. When you play it just keep on the attack. The next deck is what we call "Scrub-beater." It just beats the hell out of your opponent as if he were scrubier than scruberson. It is a Black Weenie, kinda like Hackerpotence with no necro. Here it is. 4 Black Knight 4 Dauthi Slayer 4 Erg Raider 2 Barrow Ghoul 4 Sewer Rats 4 Sarcomancy 4 Unholy Strength 4 Bad Moon 4 Paralyze 1 Reckless Spite 1 Kaervek's Spite 2 Cursed Scroll 4 Dark Ritual 18 Swamp It is the same as sligh. Just keep on the attack. Our next deck is White Weenie. This white weenie was played by Brock Parker, the kid that got ninth at the mid-atlantic regional because of tie-breakers. This is the most aggresive WW out there, no doubt. It is very fast and has no problem getting mana. Here it is. 4 White Knight 4 Soltari Priest 4 Soltari Monk 4 Warrior En-Kor 2 Order of the White Shield 4 Nomads En-Kor 4 Soltari Foot Soldier 4 Infintry Veteran 4 Crusade 4 Disenchant 4 Cursed Scroll 4 Tithe 14 Plains Like I said, it is the most aggresive WW out there. You should ussually get 2 lands or a land and a Tithe, which will be plenty. It follows the same principle as the sligh and Wifebeater, always keep on the attack. The next deck is El Nino (Tradewind Prison). This deck was invented (what we would like to think) by Blair Jhonsan. When I first saw the deck I thought it was a joke but I have learned that a tradewind followed by a geddon is a good thing. Here it is. 4 Tradewind Rider 3 Wall of Blossams 3 Wall of Roots 4 Birds of Paradise 3 Man O' War 3 Uktabi Ourangutane 3 Spike Feeder 3 Legacy's Allure 2 Counterspell 2 Mana Leak 2 Power Sink 3 Armageddon 4 Impusle 3 Adakar Wastes 3 Brushland 3 Undiscovered Paradise 7 Forest 5 Island Play this deck defensively. It is one of those decks that likes to develop. If you do think you can, get out that tradewind and geddon right away. Just don't be dumb and geddon when you know they can kill your tradewind rider. the next deck is the Bloom deck. this deck may be called bad by players that try to play it when they don't know how. So don't play this deck if you are a beginner. 4 Squandered Recources 4 Cadaverous Bloom 4 Natural Balance 4 Prosperity 4 Infernal Contract 3 Meditate 3 Vampiric Tutor 4 Power Sink 4 Impulse 2 City of Sollitude 1 Drain Life 4 City of Brass 4 Gemstone Mine 5 Island 5 Forest 5 Swamp This is a deck of skill, and those who have experiance know that this is still a very good deck. The last deck I am bringing you is a Lockdown deck. It combines many cards to keep your opponent from attacking or being able to play spells. This is a new deck in the works of becoming a performing deck. Here it is. 4 Propaganda 3 Sylvan Library 3 Armageddon 3 Wrath of God 3 Gerrard's Wisdom 3 Disenchant 2 Intuition 1 Pendral Mists 2 Pursuit of Knowlage 3 Brainstorm 4 Mana Leak 3 Gaea's Blessing 4 Tithe 4 Mox Diamond 4 Undiscovered Paradise 4 Gemstone Mine 1 Reflecting Pool 9 Plains Play this deck according to what your opponent is playing and everything should go as expected. That is all the decks I have to give you for right now. Please notice that I have not included Exodus in any of these decks, I did this because our group has not started to playtest it for nationals yet, but when I find what is strong, I will be sure to let you know after nationals. That is all for now. Later, Iron Peter Ripley
