Subject: Black's Back - black weenie deck Date: Fri, 5 Jun 1998 22:39:28 +0200 From: Thomas Troetscher After reading about the comback of black weenie in tournaments I thought i'd make one myself. I have no great experience in deckbuilding, and I made the deck out of mostly common and uncommons. The deck shouldn't be too hard to build even with a very limited amount of cards (like i have myself). After playtesting the deck some times with apprentice I felt that the deck has got some potential. Here's the decklist: ParAskari v 0.1 =============== Creature enhancers (9) 4 Unholy Strength (with few creatures out this is better than Bad Moon (and common)) 3 Funeral Charm (instant, make a black knight 4/1 -> kill a x/4) 2 Bad Moon Critter (24) 4 Erg Raiders (unscrollable :-) ) 4 Dauthi Slayer 4 Black Knight 4 Fallen Askari (they're good, kill opponents Black Knights) 4 Dauthi Horror 4 Dauthi Marauder (first turn + dark ritual rocks) Creature control (4) 4 Paralyze (work great, support "mana curve") Mana Sources (23) 3 Blood Pet 4 Dark Ritual 16 Swamp TOTAL = 60 =============== I have not played with sideboard (make one yourself :) ) but here's something: SB: 3 Perish SB: 3 Gloom SB: 1 Disrupting Scepter SB: 4 Phyrexian Furnace SB: 4 Dread of Night Mana Curve: 1cc: |||||||||||||||||| 18 2cc: |||||||||||||||||||||| 22 3cc: |||| 4 The reason for playing Paralyze instead of terror/edict/banishing and using the Charms & Unholy Strengths instead of more bad moons is mostly because of the mancurve. What I mean is; before i put in the 1cc, goldfish tests showed that the deck worked bad with 3 or 1 mana. With 3 man I can now cast a critter AND pump/paralyze a creature. The paralyzes work great in such a fast deck. So far this deck has won 3 times and lost 3 times. *1st game vs. WW - first turn dark r. + Marauder, second turn critter, third turn paralyze/paralyze/unholy -> game. *2nd game vs. Discard - hehe, he stood no chance. *3rd game vs. "Red/Black: cursed-burn critter/land destruction". I lost two duels against him, he was packing loads & loads of creature destruction so i didn't stand a chance. How should i improve my deck to beat this kind of decks?? Any black untargetable critters? *4th game vs. another Black weenie - he won the first duel, I won the second duel. My Fallen askari just killed of his knights and paralyze worked really good. (IMO much better than edict in this deck) I have never had mana problems with this deck, but I have been playtesting with apprentice (the shuffler isn't very good), but so has my opponents. I may have to add land and remove something else from the deck when building the real version, but what - blood pets?? A nice addition to this deck would be Unstable Mutation, but i don't want to make it multi color. I'm looking forward to any comments/suggestions on this deck. This was my first deck posting to the list, hope i wasn't wasting bandwith. -- Thomas Troetscher (wtrotsch@online.no) Norway
