Subject: Turbo Greed deck Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 14:03:53 -0500 From: "Poteet, Richard" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Greetings Frank, The reason I am writing to you is that I have a lot of respect for you and your work to the Magic Dojo. I have finished a new deck for green and I would like to submit it for your review. For a long time since I started playing Magic: The Gathering, I have felt that green needed some type of card drawing engine with all the creatures. Lo and behold, the Stronghold set comes out with the artifact, horn of Greed which says: Whenever any player plays a land, that player draws a card. This card was made for green! The green sorcery combo which goes with the 'horn' is Summer Bloom. If you have three to four land in your hand, Summer Bloom becomes an 'Ancestral Recall' for one green and one colorless mana. The key to using this combo is to get the horn of Greed out early when you still have land, so 'Eladamri's Vineyard' comes to mind. If you get the 'vinyard' out on turn one, then you can play the 'horn' on turn two and drop a land to draw a card. Then on turn three, 'summer bloom' for free. Also, a way of 'loading' up your hand with land is to use creatures that make you return forests to your hand (e.g. Bull Elephant, Quirion Ranger, etc.). The other card drawing engine in this deck is the 'Wall of Blossoms' or 'Striped Bears' and 'Stampeding Wildebeests' combo. Simply replaying the 'cantrip' creature 'nets' an extra card each turn. The rest of the deck makes use of all that green mana. Killer Bees, Llanowar Sentinel, Mishra's Factory, and Overrun puts the green mana to work. This deck is very fast and furious for green. The Ghost Town and Quirion Ranger were considered for this deck, but are too slow. With all the ways to draw cards in this deck, having land in your hand is often not a problem and the green mana is more valuable in play. Here is the current decklist: Land 4 Mishra's Factory 19 Forest Artifact 4 horn of Greed Green 4 Eladamri's Vinyard 4 Summer Bloom 3 Overrun 2 Creeping Mold 1 Elven Cache 4 Llanowar Sentinel 4 Stampeding Wildebeests 4 Killer Bees 3 Bull Elephant 2 Wall of Blossoms 2 Striped Bears Total - 60 cards Sideboard is not included but would be simple to put together. Color hoser cards for blue and black and anti-creature damage for red are easy to come by for green. White is harder to sideboard for but with 'vineyard' in the deck, 'white weenie' usually 'mana burns' on the main phase until disenchanted. Land destruction may be another option to go with after 'seeing' a lot of four and five color decks in the tournament environment. I think "Turbo Greed" is a fun deck to put together and play. I believe that all the cards are in the current type II environment and not very hard to come by. This deck is still in the 'playtesting' phase so tournament reports may follow. After the release of Stronghold, the green mage can finally have some 'cheese' to go with their wine(whine). : ) Sincerely, Richard D. Poteet
