NO KIDDING! Last I checked, time is money, I don't mind volunteering my time, but not my money. I film football and basketball games and practices for my college. I am somewhat of an assistant coach with the football cuz I am there so often learning from the coaches on how to become (eventually) a coach. I give that time willingly. But you know, it has started becoming upwards of 30 hours a week. You try going to school full time and volunteer 30 hours a week, it doesn't happen. I broached the subject of pay early on during this relationship and the coaches and athletic director were in unanimous agreement, "Of course you'll get paid, you're providing a service to us that takes a lot of your time" Sounds like Tournament judges, right? In any event, I get payed minimum wage per weekday hour worked and a flat $75 each saturday for filming the game, traveling with the team, and staying an extra 4 hours afterwarsd to dub the tapes a few times. all in all it comes out to about $100 a week after taxes, nothing spectacular, but it pays the bar bills, you know? Why does it seem to me that the only thing you DON'T get payed for when sacrificing massive amounts of time is Tournament judging in Magic? I gaurantee you chess judges at major tournaments get payed. I know, I asked one once while I was at the Amateurs East a while ago. No referee (with the possible exception of Pee-wee soccer games) does his craft for free.
