Subject: Re:Is MTG dead? By Jared Pinkos Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1998 15:59:13 PDT From: "Gayle Thompson" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I'd just like to respond to a couple of statements by Mr. Pinkos in his post about "Is Magic Dead". In this post he blasted the average Magic player as being 1)UGLY! "The players who play this game are among the dirtiest, smelliest ugliest people i've ever met", and 2) usually over-aged child-like adults. I have been playing Magic for about 3 years now. Magic, as Mr. Pinkos does not seem to understand is not not for people who care more about what shoes they should wear to the tournament than they care about whether or not they're going to win. And yes, I have looked around the room at a tournament and thought it was a bit of a "nerd fest"; but you know what I was there too, so does that make me one of the unwashed masses? I think NOT! And MTG is certainly not "played by geeks and losers" because most of the players are college educated, successful people. And as for the mental hospital comment "but they are pitiful excuses for human beings", I'm really sorry that Mr. Pinkos' opinion of people consists solely of how often they shower or how social they are. The point I'm trying to make here is that the game will only ever be attractive to a small percentage of people, and if a large percentage of people in Mr. Pinkos' opinion happen to be ugly, than maybe he should stick to the singles bars instead of looking for "the beautiful people" at a tournament designed for people who base most of their life around intelligence. I happen to be one of the few women who appear at Magic tournaments; and one of the few good looking enough to wear a half-shirt and get away with it, wholesale. Now sometimes I wonder why there aren't more women playing; you know why? Because it's a game designed for boys. It's about fantasy, and people screaming "Song of Blood is awesome", this is hardly what most 18-25 yr old girls want to do ALL DAY on a Saturday, especially while The Gap is open! On the second opinion about "whining FULL GROWN ADULTS"; everybody has a right to whine. Everybody has gotten syked up about a tournament (especially a Qualifier) only to have Stone Rain be their best card. I've been there, and it sucks! And I have a right to whine! And especially they should be pissed off if someone is cheating which Mr. Pinkos appears to abhor so much. If someone happens to be 30+ and still enjoys playing an intelligent game, so be it! I mean Mr. Pinkos complains about interest for the game, then condemns those who continue to play it past 18 yrs. I suggest to Mr. Pinkos and anyone else who agrees with his statement about trying to convince people to come, those people probably won't enjoy the game because they will be too worried about which Banana Republic shirt to wear and not what deck they're going to build. And besides they will probably only have 2 years to play before they're ousted by Mr. Pinkos' age limit. So why should they start? In closing there's something to say for Tom Guevin, who although no master of style can certainly play a mean game of MTG! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
