Subject: Re: Is mtg dead? Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 19:28:44 PDT From: "paul jordan" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Magic is not dead. Everyone well knows that it'll be around for a while longer. WOTC would have to do something extreme to kill of Magic now. Yes, problems do exist, but Magic is by no means dead. Some people have gotten a panic attack because of a small decline. When people go back to school, MTG slows a little. When PTQs are only for a trip to Rome, which you have to fund on your own, MTG slows a little. Fear not, it'll rebound, it always does. A lot of people are complaining about the "rapid" cycle of sets. well, take a look at all the constructed formats, especially t2 and Rath. They're dull. We all know which decks to expect, we all know which deck has a better chance of winning in a matchup (BIG disclaimer here: skill does still matter. Jon Finkel is the supreme example of this. When he plays a deck that should lose, do you see a check in the "L" column for him?). But we all cannot be as the machine is. How decks perform against other decks has a large bearing on the outcome of a match. Anyway, constructed formats are bland now. They need something to spice them up. A new set is just what they need. What better time? Just before Christmas, so all those people that can't afford to buy Urza (here's a little helpful hint--find somewhere where you can get cheap boxes) can simply ask Santa. No better time for a format changing expansion, is there? I've seen many people saying that M/V/W should not all be cycled out at once. Get over it. It keeps the scene fresh. Besides, what new player is going to buy Mi, Vi, We, Te, Sh, Ex and Urza? Not to mention 5th. The scene will get over it. Remember when the Ice Age block left? We're still here, aren't we? In short, stop griping about short term problems.
