Subject: [issue] a new sealed format?(long) Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 19:10:29 -0700 From: Michael Maloney To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com does anyone else dislike "sealed luck" format? why? is it because you got really strong red like fanning AND rolling thunder AND flowstone mauler but only 4 mountians? or the random scrub next to you opened to a tradewind AND cursed scroll AND capsize PLUS 5 islands AND thalakos lowlands AND WHITE SHADOW BEATDOWN! yeah,me too - sealed sucks sometimes. but i have an idea: instead of 1 starter and 2boosters how about 3 tempest,1 stronghold and 1 exodus boosters (or whatever expansion currently out) PLUS whatever land you need to make your cards work! lets do the math - starter - 60 cards 22 land (distributed 5/5/4/4/4) 3 rares, 9 uncommon, 26 common booster - 15 cards 1 rare, 3 uncommon, 11 common thats 90 cards to build a deck + 5 additional land or 5 rares,15 uncommon,48 common + 5 land = 95 with my method you get: 5 boosters or 5 rares, 15 uncommon, 55 common, 0 land (unless you pulled land in the rare/uncommon slots) whats the difference? rares=same, uncommons=same, commons=7 more cards for a total of 75 cards PLUS NO COLOR SCREW! now try this for yourself on the sealed deck generator. do you get better cards - no can you build better decks - consistently - YES! why? 1)no mana problems 2)multiples of cards often makes the difference(imho) imagine getting 2 disturbed burial plus deaths duet - or 2 kindles and fanning the flames. now you can build a deck with a theme (or sub- theme) and probably go (gasp) 2 colors - in sealed - lastly, what does this accomplish? how about less random luck at a ptq. how about less random scrubs in the top 8 (i hear you jamie) how about rewarding strong deck- building skills not strong deck opening skills. anyway just an idea try it and let me know what you think. mike maloney random scrub extrordinare bard without a clue loves to play fatties
