Subject: Variety in Type 2 Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 15:14:22 PDT From: "Dominick Riesland" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I disagree with the concept that there is not enough variety in Type II (Standard) Constructed Magic. The decks that are poular now will not be next month, and those will take a back seat to others when the next realignment takes place. When any new set enters the environment, several things occur. Certain decks are created, based on a new card. Even now, people are looking to abuse Pandemonium, Equilibrium, and many of the Oaths, just to name a few cards from Exodus. Other decks become more viable than they were. Adding Forbid to certain blue control decks may make them really strong, for example. And other decks may be weakened due to a new hoser card added. Tempest nearly killed Stompy thanks to Perish, and Stronghold did almost the same thing to land destruction with Sacred Ground. And as if that weren't enough, add to that the effect of a block _leaving_ the environment, which happens every year. There will not be any Type II Er'tog decks in December; both cards which comprise the name will have cycled out. Also note the pendulum swings between active and reactive decks on a regular basis. One will rule for a time until the other finds a way to cope with the new technology. Then the other will rule until the pendulum swings back. In short, the environment is kind of like the weather here in Milwaukee: If you don't like it, wait a few minutes for it to change. ;-) Dominick Riesland, "The TURNABOUT Guy" Somewhat Official Milwaukee Rules Guru DCI Level I Judge (and climbing) ======================== "Contrary to popular opinion, I _do_not_ know everything." ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
