Subject: Re: Resignation Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 17:44:14 -0700 From: Barratt Moy To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I tried in the beginning to form a Judges Guild, but it failed due to lack of interest/activity. I will ask again that people rally and form a guild that has suggested guidelines on pay and travel expenses. As far as I know, many of the Level III judges (myself included) are on a "no pay, no judge" policy. Many of these are prominent judges that judge MANY qualifiers and are the best in the field. I, for one, am dissapointed in the WotC response to these issues. There has been no clear statement of intent, there has been no progress. The most unfortunate thing is that people continue to volunteer to help WotC. My hope is that at Nationals, there are only a few judges to help... A clear signal has to be sent about the abuse of judges at major events. If WotC spent even 5% (Barclay's 15% would pay the judges as well as most winning players) of what they spend on players on judges, we wouldn't be having this conversation. WotC needs to hire a professional team of judges (for each region of the world) and tell the rest of us that we should expect nothing for helping WotC. They give away $150,000 at each PT, now if they spent $7,500 (5%) on feeding, housing and transporting a dozen judges for each PT, they would get their professional teams set up in no time. The VAST majority of Level III judges are more than willing to volunteer time, but asking them to volunteer extra money is going too far.
