Subject: Reprinting affecting prices Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 16:33:51 -0500 (CDT) From: BILL DICKS To: fkusumot@IX.NETCOM.COM Frank, I'd like to respond to J. Moyer's post about reprinting the old power cards. 1st off, the reason that a Black Lotus is $250 or so is supply and demand. There are only several thousand of them, yet there are millions of magic players. Every magic player would like to have one, but each has a certain maximum price they will pay before deciding the card isn't worth it and buying other cards instead. Mr. Moyer assumes incorrectly that the reprinted versions will command the same price - but they won't. Because of current print run sizes, there will be several million Black Loti (or whatever old, power card you want to use as an example) now on the market. So now the # of magic players is relatively constant (just assume this for now, it's a completely different arguement). So now there is apporximately one black lotus per magic player, rather than 1 per every 10,000 players. Do you know why dual lands are ~$10-15 and Moxes are ~$100? because of the supply. The demand for dual lands is probably much greater than the demand for moxen (because there are 10 different ones and because they're much more essential to many more decks). Yet why the low price? Becuase of the relatively huge print run size of revised (as compared to UL/Beta). Simple supply and demand at work...... Bill Dicks
